I used to think sweatshirts were only for the sports field, how wrong I was.

I don’t recall wearing sweaters while living in New Zealand or Australia. When temperatures started to drop my second layer of choice was typically a cardigan.

Moving to The Netherlands and seeing different styles pop up on other sewists instagram pages changed my perspective. With the right pattern and fabric I discovered a sweater could be casual but considered, chic and oh so comfy.

Sewing with knit fabrics hasn’t been something I’ve enjoyed and I find it difficult to get a finish that I’m satisfied with. While technically you don’t need an overlocker (serger) to sew knit fabrics in Christmas 2018 I invested in one. I must say 3 years later I’m still trying to figure out how to use it properly.

Below are some brief notes about each of the sweater patterns I’ve tried.

Notes

  • Apollon by I AM patterns

My preferred sweater pattern because of the slim fit and cut of the shoulders/sleeves. Those with a sharp eye will notice that on both the black and floral version the neck band sits up a little. It could be a design feature, but for my next version I will shorten the band to make it sit flatter.

  • High Cuff Sweater by The Assembly Line

With a more oversized fit than I was expecting and arms that were very long there was a little bit of disappointment when I tried the first attempt. I made the size smaller in the same fabric straight away, still not quite what I had in mind and gifted that one to a friend. My first version is getting a lot of wear because I love the fabric and when I find time I’m going to make a third version. It will be the XS with the bottom half of the S and arms with 2-3 inches taken off the length.

  • Linden Sweatshirt by Grainline Studios

This is one of the first sweatshirt patterns I tried sewing when I was keen to practice sewing with knit fabrics. I wasn’t a fan of the raglan sleeves or the fabric I used so it is no surprise I didn’t wear the sweater. The slightly scoped neck means you see the sides of the t-shirt which I was also not a fan of. If I try a second attempt I would use a lighter weight jersey fabric and use it more as a long-sleeve t-shirt.

  • Hosta Tee & Sweatshirt by Fancy Tiger

I wore this very boxy shaped sweater a lot, especially with skinny jeans. I made the size small and while happy with the style it was a bit short and after a few washes became even shorter and no longer wearable.
