Offline is the new luxury

Screens are everywhere, even on sewing machines, inundating us with information, entertainment and content to consume.  A little bit of hand sewing could be just the remedy we need to provide a balance.

American piecing, is a technique where the fabric pieces are cut and seam lines are drawn directly on to the fabric.  The challenge is to cut and draw accurately and make sure the running stitch follows the seam line exactly.

A benefit of American Piecing is that you don’t need a lot of supplies and it is portable.  Instead of pulling out your phone next time you want to relax, perhaps you might like to pull out some hand sewing?

STEP 1 | Mark and cut the fabric.
Step 2 | Insert the needle exactly on the corner of your markings. Use a running stitch to sew along the line, use a pin with a low profile to hold the fabric at the point you are sewing to.
The running stitch should follow the seam line exactly.
Step 3 | Press the seams from the back, then check the front as it may need pressing open from the front also.
