Techniques: American Piecing

Over the 2018/2019 Australian summer Robyn from The Strawberry Thief released her Summer Blooms quilt pattern. She used American piecing to construct the quilt, an approach I had never heard of before.  I was desperate to learn more.

American piecing, is a technique where the fabric shapes are cut and then the seam lines are drawn directly on to the fabric.  The challenge is to draw thin, accurate lines and make sure your running stitch follows the line exactly.

To get started I watched Robyn’s tutorial on Instagram and followed all her suggestions.  I like that it’s portable and faster than english paper piecing.

notes

  • Draw accurate seam lines. A quilting pencil, but the sewline fabric pencil gives a much cleaner, sharper more accurate line.

  • Stay on point. Try to insert your needle exactly on the corner of your markings.

  • A finger pin cushion is useful and for Liberty Tana Lawn fabric I usually buy from Liberty, The Strawberry Thief or Alice Caroline .
