Techniques: English Paper Piecing

English paper piecing, also known as EPP, is a technique where the fabric is first attached to pieces of paper by glue or large temporary basting stitches.  The shapes are then sewn together with a whip stitch.

This sort of craft is not for those wanting a quick finish but you can speed it up by using larger shapes.  I like that it doesn’t require too much concentration and the paper pieces give you perfectly straight edges and on point corners.

I’m still working towards finishing my first english paper piecing quilt and so far I have tried three different techniques for cutting my hexagons, three brands of paper pieces, two techniques for attaching the fabric to the paper, two brands of glue pen, four brands of needles, three brands of thread and I’m still experimenting with how I do my whipstitch.

notes

  • Choose fabrics that spark joy. When you pick up the fabric you want it to evoke memories or make you smile while working with it.

  • Use quality tools. Stitching by hand can involve a lot of hours of work using quality tools, especially sharp needles, will make those hours even more enjoyable.
